         Prof. Steen, will present, in synopsis form, an over view of the "historical" development of painting in "plein air"
         The idea of painting in "plein air" was a technique developed in France in the late 19th century by non-academic landscape painters.  How it traveled to the east coast of the United States and by whom, how it was specifically transmuted to SoCA and was subsequently developed and taught to local artists and by whom will be presented.  The illustrated presentation will cover from Monet and French Impressionism, to William Merritt Chase and American Impressions on the east coast, to SoCA “plein air” painting over all and to specifically the San Gabriel Valley and William Lees Judson, painter and art teacher, and more................including the current state of contemporary landscape painting.
         The stylistic characteristics of each historical phase will be delineated as well as juxtaposed.  In conclusion the assessment of the state of contemporary landscape painting will be illuminated.  Information about Prof. Steen can be viewed at www.SteenArtStudy.com

         This exhibition presents the current state of the theme of landscape in contemporary art, including the land, the city, and water in Southern California art specifically as it exists outside of the historical plein air painting style. The work of 29 artists included in the exhibition are, Peter Alexander,Sandow Birk,John Brosio, Phoebe Brunner, Darlene Campbell , Jennifer Celio, Patricia Chidlaw, Wes Christensen, James Doolin, Sharon Ellis, Sylvi Herrick, David Hines, David Hockney, Mark Innerst, Peter Krausz, David Ligare, Norman Lundin, Rebecca Morales, Marina Moevs, Barrie Mottishaw, Shirley Pettibone, Roxene Rockwell, Lezley Saar, Stephanie Sanchez, Richard Sedivy, Luis Serrano, Greg Skol, Jon Swihart, & Marc Trujillo. Works are loaned by artists, collectors, art institutions and galleries. A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
