Who we are

OUR HISTORY

Judson Studios is the oldest family-run stained-glass company in America. For more than 125 years, we have designed, fabricated, restored, and installed thousands of iconic stained glass and fused glass projects throughout the United States and around the world. Our studio was established in Los Angeles in 1897 by the painter and professor, William Lees Judson, and his three sons. Helmed by Walter Horace, the eldest son and a stained-glass expert, our organization thrived from the start, beautifying the booming L.A. metropolis with projects that represented the best in traditional and modern design. Under the leadership of David Judson, the fifth-generation president of Judson Studios, we have expanded into three locations, acquired cutting-edge equipment to enhance our technological capabilities, developed innovative glass making methods, collaborated with a diverse roster of talented artists, and created some of our most ambitious projects to date.

Judson Studios is Still Family Run

Our current president, David Judson, is the fifth generation Judson family member to own and operate the studio. David and his team bring a 21st century sensibility and technological savvy to the revered craft of glassmaking. A supporter of the arts, like his great-great grandfather William Lees, David believes in maintaining a workplace that fosters creative expression. The studio hosts on-site art exhibitions, and our full-time staff and expanding community of global collaborators includes visionary artists who bring fresh eyes to the dynamic practice of stained and fused glass.

OUR HISTORIC HEADQUARTERS

Our traditional stained glass fabrication and restoration projects are completed at our headquarters in the Garvanza district of L.A.’s Highland Park neighborhood. The original building on the property was designed by the founder of Judson Studios, William Lees Judson, in 1900. That structure was destroyed by a tragic fire ten years later. Local architects, Train & Williams, designed the existing building, which was constructed in 1911. William Lees served as the first dean of the University of Southern California’s College of Fine Arts, which was located on the site from 1901 to 1920. Judson Studios acquired the property when USC moved to its current campus in Exposition Park.

In 1969, the Craftsman-inspired, shingled building was declared Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument No. 62 and lauded as “the preeminent center in the West for the development of master craftsmen in the historical art of stained glass and mosaics.” The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Walking through its winding passageways into the light-filled cutting room and the cavernous subterranean glazing room is like being transported back in time. To this day, our team creates under the words of William Lees Judson, which were painted on the walls more than a century ago: “Only the best is worthwhile.”
